School Magazine Evaluation

I believe my school magazine complies with most of the conventions found in real magazines. It has a main image of the models in a mid-shot, it has a consistent colour scheme, the title is at the top and I have included a bar-code, school logo and cover lines. The title has the biggest font so it stands out the most and allows the reader to recognise the magazine easily. My contents page has a mixture of images and text to keep the page looking interesting and both pages have consistent colour scheme of mainly blue and white. I have also challenged conventions as I haven’t included a headline which implies there is no main article and they’re all equal. I also didn’t add any puffs or many extra images as I thought a simplistic look would appeal to all students in every year group and keep the focus on the main information.

The main image shows two students sitting outside and revising which represents the students and the work ethic of the school. This issue of the magazine would represent the older side of students as the main image shows students in the sixth form and the cover lines also appeal to students taking exams and interested in work experience. I used sixth formers as they are the oldest in the school and younger years look up to them as role models which may appeal to them and interest them in reading the magazine.

I would use a small publisher as I would only need to distribute the magazine to students, teachers and parents.

My magazine is largely aimed at students attending the school as it involves articles that would appeal to them, but I have also aimed it at parents and teachers to inform everyone about what current events are taking place within the school. The main image is of students which denote it is primarily aimed at the students and the cover lines are also directed at them.

To attract my audience I used a colour scheme resembling the school uniform to establish that the magazine will be linked to school and apply to the students. I used large and clear text so it is easy to read but I didn’t cram the page full of information as that may have put off the readers. I didn’t cram the page with too much text to overwhelm the readers with information which would make it more appealing to want to look at and read.

I used Photoshop to create my school magazine as I have had a little bit of practice before with GCSE ICT, so know some of the basic functions. I used various tools such as transformations, the magic wand tool, text boxes and colour overlaying. From using this software I have become more comfortable with the different tools and what it can enable me to do and I believe that when I construct my music magazine I’d be able to make it look more professional and developed.
